GOETHITE    Knox Mtn. Ossipee, NH
7 mm field of view. Reddish goethite crystal on right, smoky quartz crystal on left.
Species:           GOETHITE
Locality:          Knox Mtn. Ossipee, NH
Specimen Size: 7 mm field of view. Reddish goethite crystal on right, smoky quartz crystal on left.
Field Collected: Tom Mortimer
Catalog No.: u252
Notes: When I collected this, I thought this might be a danalite crystal, or perhaps monazite based on the color and the miarolitic cavity environment. The shape suggest garnet, but I have never seen garnet in a NH miarolitic cavity. An EDS analysis showed only Fe (of elements > sodium), so goethite/limonite. This is likely a pseudomorph after pyrite.

GOETHITE    Stoddard Mine, Westmoreland, NH
9 mm field of view. Dark brown, resinous, goethite in quartz with green malachite
Species:           GOETHITE
Locality:          Stoddard Mine, Westmoreland, NH
Specimen Size: 9 mm field of view. Dark brown, resinous, goethite in quartz with green malachite
Field Collected: Tom Mortimer
Catalog No.: TBC
Notes: Goethite confirmed by EDS analysis (BC136). For some time I had wondered what this brown resinous mineral was. The analysis and surrounding malachite indicate a former chalcopyrite mineral altered to goethite.

1.5 mm goethite crystal

Species:           GOETHITE

GOETHITE   Johnson Rd., Bow, NH
2.5 cm specimen.

Species:           GOETHITE
Locality:          Johnson Rd., Bow, NH
Specimen Size: 2.5 cm specimen.
Field Collected: 2016
Catalog No.: u2165
Notes: A January, 2018 carbon tape EDS analysis showed mostly an iron oxide (goethite) with a bit of zinc and sulfur. I had considered this deep orange mineral might be minium, the lead-oxide mineral, due to all the decomposing galena nearby.
